Contributing and development

Improve the skill and site with scoped changes and recorded checks.

Work from a local checkout

Read docs/FORMAT.md, docs/WORKFLOWS.md, and docs/ROADMAP.md before adding behavior. Keep changes within the v1 scope and preserve existing user files. Focus script tests on real state integrity and preservation risks.

The source is available in the GitHub repository. Use issues and pull requests with the problem, intended behavior, and exact verification results.

Skill checks

From the repository root:

python -m unittest discover -s tests -p "test_*.py"
python skill/devthread/scripts/validate.py .

Every local script also supports --help. The Python scripts require no third-party dependencies.

Website development

Node.js 20.9 or later is required by the selected Next.js version. The tested build environment uses Node 22.18.0 and npm 11.5.2. From website/:

npm ci
npm run dev

Before handing off a website change, run:

npm run lint
npm run typecheck
npm run build
npm run check:links
npm run check:search
npm run check:contrast

The site exports static files to website/out/. See website/README.md for the tracked repository URL and publication checks. Publishing requires completed release checks and separate approval.

Compatibility contributions

Supply packaging, discovery, workflow, and fresh-session recovery evidence for a new environment. An agent or platform becomes tested through observed results, not through intent.

DevThread uses the MIT license. The repository does not currently require a contributor license agreement.
