Task lifecycle

Status describes work progression; evidence describes support for implementation claims.

Status values

StatusMeaning
backlogDefined but not ready to start
readyEligible to start; all dependencies are done
in_progressWork is underway
blockedA stated impediment prevents progress
reviewImplementation awaits review or verification
doneAcceptance criteria were explicitly reviewed and status updated

Tasks can move back when evidence changes; this is not a rigid one-way pipeline. Record the reason for a block or reopened task.

Dependencies and priority

depends_on lists existing task IDs. References must be unique, cannot point to the task itself, and cannot form cycles. A task marked ready while a dependency is unfinished is invalid state.

The next workflow selects ready tasks whose dependencies are done, ordering by high, medium, then low priority and breaking ties by numeric task ID.

Completion is a review decision

Source changes and passing tests do not automatically set done. Check each acceptance criterion and any contradictory evidence before updating the task. The Taskboard example ends with TASK-002 in review even after four passing tests.

Evidence levels are separate from these statuses. A task can be in review with verified checks, or have a prior done status while new failing evidence exposes drift.
